Core Surgical Skills Course

The Challenge

Create a web-based training series to help teach veterinary students the fundamental surgical skills necessary to perform any entry-level surgical procedure.

The Solution

The CET partnered with Dr. Daniel Smeak of Colorado State University and Dr. Lawrence Hill of The Ohio State University to develop the Core Surgical Skills course consisting of a set of modules containing interactive activities, instructional videos, practice exercises, and assessments.

The flexible modular design allows “tailored” experiences as students are guided through a self-paced, low stakes learning environment housed within a centralized e-learning platform.

The Results

Feedback from faculty using the CSS course shows that students pick up nuances and tips that there is normally not time to cover in labs.

They see increased student confidence, and find that students have more time in lab to practice rather than time spent receiving basic instructions.
