{"id":2634,"date":"2019-06-27T15:27:44","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T15:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/?post_type=knowledge_base&#038;p=2634"},"modified":"2026-07-24T17:51:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T17:51:14","slug":"creating-advanced-multiple-answer-multiple-choice-amamc-assessment-types","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/creating-advanced-multiple-answer-multiple-choice-amamc-assessment-types\/","title":{"rendered":"Step Assessments: Advanced Multiple Answer Multiple Choice (AMAMC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Learners interact with the Advanced Multiple Answer Multiple Choice step assessment type in exactly the same way as the standard MAMC, but this assessment type provides an additional, flexible set of evaluation features for authors to utilize.<\/p>\n<p>The basic operation of adding choices and configuring the funneled results is the same as the MAMC assessment type. Please review the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/creating-mamc\/\">MAMC tutorial<\/a> for details on these assessment elements.<\/p>\n<p>The AMAMC assessment type introduces the following features :<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vital for Correct Result (Choice option toggle)<\/strong><br \/>\n<br \/>\nAny choices with a Correct status will also have a toggle option available \u201cVital for Correct Result\u201d.<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If NO choices have this option toggled \u201con\u201d, then ALL correct choices MUST be selected by the learner to arrive at the Correct funneled result. (Vital patterns are also checked for matching results, described in the Patterns section below)<\/li>\n<li>If ONE OR MORE choices have this option toggled \u201con\u201d :\n<ul>\n<li>ALL of the choices with this option toggled \u201con\u201d MUST be selected by the learner to arrive at the Correct funneled result.<\/li>\n<li>Any Correct choices that DO NOT have this option toggled \u201con\u201d should be considered valid Correct choices, but are NOT vitally required to arrive at the Correct funneled result. Keeping these \u201cnon-vital&#8221; choices status as Correct allows for choices that may be \u201ctechnically correct\u201d, but should not affect the outcome as the Vital Correct choices (should not cause a \u201cPartial\u201d funneled outcome, for example.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vital_for_correct.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1177\" height=\"871\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vital_for_correct.jpg 1177w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vital_for_correct-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vital_for_correct-768x568.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vital_for_correct-1024x758.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/vital_for_correct-710x525.jpg 710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1177px) 100vw, 1177px\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<strong>RULES<\/strong><br \/>\n<br \/>\nMinimum and Maximum Selected Requirement option toggles :<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If Minimum Selected Requirement is toggled \u201coff\u201d, the minimum defaults to 1.<\/li>\n<li>If Minimum Selected Requirement is toggled \u201con\u201d :\n<ul>\n<li>The minimum value field is made available, defaults to 1, and must be between 1 and the number of available choices.<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cForced\u201d option toggle is made available for this requirement. This blocks the learner from checking their assessment results if the number of selected options is lower than the min. value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If Maximum Selected Requirement is toggled \u201coff\u201d, the maximum defaults to the number of available choices.<\/li>\n<li>If Maximum Selected Requirement is toggled \u201con\u201d :\n<ul>\n<li>The maximum value field is made available, defaults to the number of available choices, and must be between the Minimum Selected Requirement value (1, if Minimum Selected Requirement is toggled \u201coff\u201d) and the number of available choices.<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cForced\u201d option toggle is made available for this requirement. The influence each Pattern on the funneled result can be set with fine detail, including independently-toggleable status and score values for each Pattern\u2019s multiple evaluation results (a particular Pattern match result can influence status but not scoring, or scoring but not status, or both, or neither, etc. .)  For convenience, each Pattern provides an optional field for labeling the Pattern within the authoring environment (non-learner facing.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/patterns1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1177\" height=\"871\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/patterns1.jpg 1177w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/patterns1-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/patterns1-768x568.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/patterns1-1024x758.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tamucet.org\/stepstone\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/patterns1-710x525.jpg 710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1177px) 100vw, 1177px\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nIf a Pattern\u2019s current member list or other configuration conditions create an evaluation conflict for the Pattern, the \u201coffending\u201d Pattern\u2019s Pattern Members list will display RED and that Pattern will be excluded from the Pattern evaluation process in the Player (the assessment will otherwise operate normally, collecting and tallying all other valid choice and\/or Pattern evaluation results into the funneled outcome.) Typically this is the used as the \u201coptimal\u201d Pattern result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<li>Provide an optional \u201cNone Selected\u201d Pattern result, triggered if a learner has selected NONE of the Pattern members. Typically this is the used as the \u201cworst\u201d Pattern result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<li>If two or more choices are in the Pattern\u2019s member list, provide an optional \u201cOne+ Selected\u201d Pattern result for that And Pattern. This Pattern result is triggered if one or more, but not ALL of the Pattern\u2019s members are selected by the learner. Typically this is used as the \u201cpartially-acceptable\u201d result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssKB-hlBox ssKB-hlBoxBlue1\">\n\u201cOr\u201d Patterns :<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Require at least two members to be a valid Pattern.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a mandatory \u201cOne Selected\u201d Pattern result, triggered if a learner has selected ANY ONE of the Pattern members. Typically this is the used as the \u201coptimal\u201d Pattern result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<li>Provide an optional \u201cTwo+ Selected\u201d Pattern result, triggered if a learner has selected TWO OR MORE of the Pattern members. Typically this is used as the \u201cpartially-acceptable\u201d result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<li>Provide an optional \u201cNone Selected\u201d Pattern result, triggered if a learner has selected NONE of the Pattern members. Typically this is the used as the \u201cworst\u201d Pattern result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssKB-hlBox ssKB-hlBoxBlue1\">\n\u201cAvoid\u201d Patterns :<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Require at least one member to be a valid Pattern.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a mandatory \u201cNone Selected\u201d Pattern result, triggered if a learner has NOT selected ANY of the Pattern members (or the single choice in a single-member Pattern.) Typically this is the used as the \u201coptimal\u201d Pattern result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<li>Provide an optional \u201cAll Selected\u201d Pattern result, triggered if a learner has selected ALL of the Pattern members. Typically this is the used as the \u201cworst\u201d Pattern result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<li>If two or more choices are in the Pattern\u2019s member list, provide an optional \u201cOne+ Selected\u201d Pattern result for that Avoid Pattern. This Pattern result is triggered if one or more, but not ALL of the Pattern\u2019s members are selected by the learner. Typically this is used as the \u201cpartially-acceptable\u201d result for this Pattern type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Like choices, Patterns also have a Vital for Correct Result (Pattern option toggle) :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any Patterns bearing a (toggled \u201con\u201d) Correct status will also have a toggle option available \u201cVital for Correct Result\u201d. If toggled \u201con\u201d, any of the Pattern\u2019s Correct results will be evaluated toward the funneled handler\u2019s Correct outcome.<\/li>\n<li>This combines with any non-Patterned choices that also have a Vital for Correct Result option toggled \u201con\u201d (If ANY choices and\/or Patterns are Vitally-Correct, then ALL Vitally-Correct choies\/Pattern-match-results MUST be achieved for a Correct funneled result.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adding Patterns :<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each Pattern type has an Add Pattern button above the top-most Pattern box of that Pattern type.<\/li>\n<li>New Patterns are appended below existing Patterns in the respective Pattern type list.<\/li>\n<li>New Patterns will have no members assigned, and thus will be in \u201cconflict mode\u201d until they have choices assigned to them after creation.<\/li>\n<li>Pattern boxes cannot be reordered in the editor panel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Deleting Patterns :<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each Pattern box has an X (Delete) button in the upper right corner.<\/li>\n<li>Deleting a Pattern will sever the linkage to all choices in the deleted Pattern\u2019s member list. Choices that are not linked to any other Patterns will regain a \u201cnon-Patterned\u201d condition and have the status selection (and scoring, if applicable) controls re-enabled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Selecting Pattern Members :<br \/>\n<br \/>\nEach Pattern has a Choose button above its Pattern Members list. This will enter the Pattern Member Selection mode :<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All Choice boxes gain a control strip within the header area :\n<ul>\n<li>Each choice with the \u201cAdd To Pattern\u201d option toggled \u201con\u201d will be designated as a Pattern Member once the Pattern is applied.<\/li>\n<li>The down-pointing arrow button will conveniently scroll the editor panel down to the active Pattern box.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once all of the choices that should be members of the active Pattern are selected, return to the active Pattern (identified with a colored \u201chalo\u201d) and use the \u201cApply Selected Choices\u201d button to complete the member selection and exit this mode.\n<ul>\n<li>Any choices that are members of any Pattern will display \u201cPattern\u201d as the choice status and behavior. Pattern-assigned choices will remain as such until removed from all Patterns that include them as members.<\/li>\n<li>Choices can be members of one or more Patterns. If the feedback text is left blank, the student will still see a popup with the resulting status (Correct, Incorrect, etc.)\u00a0 If you do not wish to have any feedback popup for a given funneled result, use the \u201cClear Feedback\u201d button \u2014 with no feedback applied to the funneled result, the learner will simply move forward to the funneled result's target step. Test your changes and settings by viewing the step\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>Preview<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It is possible that one or more existing funneled results may not be reachable by the learner due to assessment structure or the available response combinations, etc.. This is normal and should not be an issue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssKB-vDivider1\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Scoring AMAMC Assessments<\/strong><br \/>\n<br \/>\nIf scoring is enabled, an option toggle &#8220;Score Funneled&#8221; is available in the CHOICES options.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If toggled &#8220;off&#8221; :\n<ul>\n<li>Scoring fields are placed in all non-Patterned, non-Neutral, non-Nullify choices.  Each non-Patterned choice can have an optional &#8220;Unselected&#8221; scoring result added (via the &#8220;Add Unselected&#8221; button next to the score field), to allow for additional scoring conditions such as a &#8220;penalty&#8221; (negative) score value applied for Correct choices that the learner fails to select.<\/li>\n<li>Scoring fields are placed in all non-Neutral, non-Nullify Pattern results.  All Pattern scoring fields provide a toggle to enable\/disable scoring for each respective Pattern result.<\/li>\n<li>Scoring is tallied from the learner&#8217;s selections.  All score-bearing, non-patterned choices and all score-bearing (and enabled) pattern match results are summed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If toggled &#8220;on&#8221; :\n<ul>\n<li>All scoring fields are removed from the stack of Choices and Patterns, and instead scoring fields are placed in all non-Neutral-status, non-Retry-behavior funneled handler result boxes.<\/li>\n<li>No score tally is performed for the assessment, all scoring is set by the funneled results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regardless of the &#8220;Score Funneled&#8221; toggle state, the Nullify funneled handler will retain a scoring field (if scoring is enabled.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssKB-vDivider1\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>AMAMC Example<\/strong><br \/>\n<br \/>\nHere we are presenting the learner with a stack of 36 choices: The letters A-Z followed by numbers 0-9. A combination of &#8220;regular&#8221; Correct choices and AMAMC Patterns are used for determining funneled results.
