PEER One Health Curriculum
Engaging, interactive online science modules for middle school students.
By providing these unique student-centered learning opportunities, educators can close the student achievement gap for middle school science students and increase student engagement in STEM education.
BACKGROUND
We developed a standards-based curriculum as part of a National Institute of Health (NIH) grant project, focusing on the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the environment. Our project provides educators with instructional materials, including free standalone online lessons, to better engage students in concepts covered on the 6th and 8th-grade science TEKS. The One Health Curriculum enables students in small- and whole-group settings to guide their own learning and engage in critical thinking while applying required science standards.

OUR APPROACH
Online lessons for the One Health Curriculum include targeted Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)-aligned instruction in addition to learning objectives to increase student engagement as they discover real-world applications of science material. The instructional materials include lessons on cell biology, stress, infectious diseases, ecology, clinical trials, genetics, and zoonotic diseases. Each lesson features integrated learning activities and a motivating tool kit to enrich the learning experience.
Additionally, the One Health curriculum fosters application-based learning by requiring students to apply the concepts from the lessons to real-world issues through hands-on activities.
