At Texas A&M University, the Center for Educational Technologies (CET) Core Facility is meeting this moment head-on. Recognizing the necessity of equipping incoming Aggies with modern digital skills, the CET has spearheaded the development of new Hullabaloo U AI courses designed to lay the foundation for lifelong AI literacy.
Collaborative Innovation: Design Meets Expertise
Creating educational content that keeps pace with rapid technological advancement requires strong collaboration. To ensure the training delivers the latest, most accurate information, the CET’s instructional and graphic designers partnered with a multidisciplinary team of subject matter experts in AI alongside stakeholders from across the university.
By pairing instructional design best practices with deep technical and ethical expertise, the team crafted learning experiences that go beyond mere technical tutorials. The training encourages critical thinking, explores ethical considerations, and highlights practical applications that students can use immediately in their academic careers.
Starting Strong: The Hullabaloo U Rollout
The university-wide initiative begins this semester with a pilot of two new AI literacy modules integrated directly into the Hullabaloo U curriculum. As the premier first-year experience program at Texas A&M, Hullabaloo U provides the ideal setting to introduce incoming students to responsible AI practices right from their very first steps on campus.
These initial modules introduce foundational concepts, including:
- Understanding AI Capability & Limits: Knowing what generative AI tools can and cannot do.
- Ethical and Academic Integrity: Navigating acceptable use, citation, and responsible problem-solving in coursework.
- Practical Application: Using AI as a thought partner to enhance learning without replacing critical thought.
Looking Ahead: A Roadmap for University-Wide AI Literacy
The Hullabaloo U pilot is only the first phase of a broader, transformative vision for AI education across Texas A&M. The work done by the CET and its partners aligns with a bold university roadmap:
- Spring 2027: The initiative will expand to offer one-credit-hour courses and AI microcredentials, allowing students to build certified, specialized skill sets that stand out to future employers.
- The Three-Year Goal: Over the next three years, Texas A&M aims to incorporate AI literacy into student learning outcomes across all university curricula, ensuring every graduate leaves with relevant AI skills regardless of their major.
- Empowering the Community: Additional educational programs will roll out for faculty and staff, strengthening campus-wide expertise and advancing scholarly research and creative endeavors.
