The Center for Educational Technologies is excited to announce the launch of Companion Animal Decision-Making Cases, an innovative online course designed for veterinary students and practicing veterinarians seeking continuing education. This course strengthens learners’ clinical reasoning skills while addressing the emotional challenges inherent in veterinary practice.
Course Overview
Veterinary medicine demands complex, high-stakes decisions that significantly impact patient outcomes and client relationships. Through this course, you’ll explore the complexity behind those choices authentically and practically. It’s about preparing for the tough calls while learning how to protect your own well-being.
Key Highlights
- Step into Four Interactive Case Studies: Make decisions in branching scenarios that mirror real-world challenges. Each path leads to different outcomes—sometimes recovery, sometimes loss—reflecting the unpredictability of practice.
- Reflect with Mental Health Experts: After each case, hear from licensed counselors who unpack the emotional side of veterinary work. They’ll share insights on grief, moral distress, and strategies for resilience and peer support.
- Learn by Doing: Apply your knowledge in real-time and get feedback that helps you grow.

Why Mental Health Matters
Veterinary medicine is both rewarding and emotionally demanding. Research indicates that veterinarians face higher levels of psychological distress and burnout compared to the general population. Contributing factors include long hours, client expectations, and moral dilemmas, all of which add to the stress experienced by professionals in the field.
This course addresses those challenges head-on. In addition to honing your clinical decision-making skills, you will learn strategies to build resilience, manage stress, and maintain your mental well-being—skills essential for thriving in veterinary practice.

The Center for Educational Technologies (CET) specializes in developing education programs, trainings, and outreach activities that complement technical experts’ research activities. Many external sponsors request that researchers’ scientific findings be disseminated through education and outreach programs. This is where the CET’s faculty can step in. By partnering with the CET, researchers can focus on their technical expertise, while CET faculty translates their research into training programs and disseminates findings to the general public. The CET offers online hosting services for websites and virtual learning. The CET has a state-of-the-art video production studio on campus, video equipment to film on-location, and equipment to film on-the-go, such as with GoPros. The CET has worked with industry, academic, and government research partners on both public and private grants. Explore our current and past collaborations at: tx.ag/getfunded.
